Not what you were expecting?
If you came here from an old link, you’re probably a little surprised. No, this isn’t Rich Stevenson’s waterfalls website! But his old site still lives on in the Waterfall Keepers of North Carolina Library & Archives. Visit the About page to learn the full scoop and read a special commentary from Rich. Click here to visit Rich's old North Carolina Waterfalls website.
Help me keep up to date.
It’s impossible to keep fully up to date on all the waterfalls in North Carolina, but I can do a better job with your help. Please use the Contact form to let me know about changes to waterfalls, or for new information of any kind. Thank you for helping!
Important note about Hurricane Helene.
Tropical Storm Helene, having been downgraded from a hurricane, roared through western North Carolina on September 26, 2024, causing unfathomable damage. I collected info for many waterfall listings on this site before Helene hit, and I won't be able to revisit all the falls that may have been affected. You should always anticipate the field experience to be different from what you read, but this is especially true after Helene. Be prepared to turn back if conditions warrant, and if the situation is different from what you read here, please let me know.

Whoever undertakes to write comprehensively on this subject will soon become aware of the weakness of exclamation points and adjectives, and the almost irresistible temptation to indulge in a style of composition which he cannot maintain, and should not if he could. So far as the writer, yielding to the inspiration of his theme...may have trespassed in this direction, he bares and bows his head to the severest treatment that the critic may adopt. His labor has been one of love, and in giving its results to the public he regrets that it is not more worthy of the subject.George W. Holley in The Falls of Niagara and Other Famous Cataracts of the World, 1883. Thanks, George, for writing the perfect intro to NCWaterfalls.com.
